Alpha Canon
As with any SIM, canon rules and specifications are very important to establishing the basis of the SIM’s setting and previous history, as well as presumed future. On the CL Dutchman SIM, we utilize Trek Alpha canon. This includes ST:ToS, ST:TAS, ST:TNG, ST:DS9, ST:VOY, and ST:ENT. The original 6 Star Trek movies focusing on the ToS crew (Kirk (Shatner)) and the next 4 Star Trek movies focusing on the TNG crew (Picard) are all considered Alpha canon. No other Star Trek Series or movies are considered Alpha canon on this SIM. All Alpha canon and details are relevant and acceptable in this SIM, to include anything seen in the movies or shows that crews may have done as a one-off modification of some sort, even if it wasn’t a universal standard across a ship type, station type, planet type, or otherwise. All Alpha canon is held relevant and true in this SIM even if it may not be in others.

Beta Canon
Beta canon also holds a place in this SIM, but under very specific rules. Beta canon cannot at any time override Alpha canon of any sort for any reason. Beta canon should only be utilized to fill in areas where there is no known Alpha canon available and only used for races or locations. Meaning something for the particular race/location was never developed fully by the writers. For example, Beta canon utilized to fill in information and descriptions about a race such as the Breen or a location such as Casperia Prime. In Alpha canon there is very little known about them however in expanded Memory Beta wiki there is additional data about them. That data may be used to expand upon what is already considered Alpha canon, but it may not change or overwrite what has been . Not researching for Alpha canon is not an excuse to utilize Beta canon in its place. In the event of conflict between Alpha and Beta canon, Alpha always wins. Additionally, any Beta canon that exists and is written beyond the current SIM year is invalid and not able to be used. This also includes any Beta canon that applies to canon characters. For example, if Vedek Bareil Antos returned to the timeline after 2371 in any of the books, it would not be applicable to be used just as if Kathryn Janeway became Fleet Admiral/Commander-in-Chief of Starfleet at some point in her Beta canon career.

Excluded/Disallowed Canon
Nothing from the “Abramsverse” (Romulus/Remus destroyed) is considered canon of any sort on this SIM and no details from the Abramsverse may be used in any form at any time. Any other Star Trek canon types other than mentioned in above sections may not be utilized in writing or developing content for the Dutchman SIM. Currently nothing from Star Trek: Discovery, Star Trek: Picard, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is considered to be allowed canon for the Dutchman SIM as well. The noted content will be reviewed at a later date and time to be determined for possible integration as canon.
Character Creation and Utilizing Canon
When creating your character, it is of course expected that you utilize alpha and sometimes beta canon in your character's biography. What writers must be careful of is exactly what aspects are utilized and in what way; on the Dutchman, we do not accept characters who's writers have put their character up on some sort of pedestal through canon. That is not to say one cannot have had some interaction with it, but it must be considerate in usage; a brush with glory so to speak is acceptable, but grabbing a character from canon - no matter how minor - and warping them to your use is not. Below are several examples of scenarios that are and are not acceptable as far as this goes. If you have any questions regarding an idea that you have and whether or not it is acceptable usage, please do not hesitate to contact the command staff.
